Support Services

What We Believe

Support Services is responsible to the people who use our services to provide the support they have outlined in their personal plan. Our job is to help people make their plan a reality.

What We Also Believe

  • Supports will be based on what people request through their plan

  • Supports will be directed by the person using the services with the help of family and friends

  • We will honour relationships people have and recognize that while staff have an important and valued role, we do not replace the need for family and friends

  • We will support people in the least intrusive manner possible

  • We are responsible to people we support, not for the people we support

Accountability

We have to make sure we are listening to each person about how they want us to work with them – from what support workers do to how they do it. While we honour the involvement of others in a person’s life, we see our accountability first and foremost to the person who uses our services.

We Have Amazing Staff

We employ about sixty part-time and full-time support workers, five team leaders and a manager who work together with the people who use our services and their families to design and provide services to over forty people. Both children and adults use our services.

How We Work

People who use our services and/or their families are part of the hiring process and choose their workers. Each person who uses our services has a team of workers around them who all work together with the person and others in their lives (ex. family) to provide individualized supports. We do not offer ‘day programs’ or other congregated services. Rather, each person decided what they want to be doing on a daily basis and we provide the services that are needed to make that happen.

We also do not have group homes. Each person lives the way that they have chosen, whether that is alone, with a supportive roommate, with someone else who uses our services, or with supportive couples or families. Each person has an individualized budget which outlines the costs of the supports based on their plan.

We Do Lots Of Different Things…

The services we provide are as diverse, of course, as the people we support. Some of the ways that we support people may include helping him or her to…

  • Meet others in the community

  • Join clubs or groups (supporting him or her to get to know others)

  • Using community services, such as the library or recreational facilities

  • Get ready for their day, which may include support for complex medical needs

  • Manage personal finances

  • Make meals and tidy-up

  • Find and keep jobs and volunteer work

  • Explore personal interests

  • Learn things they need or want to know to have a good life
